Eastwood Street, Kensington

146m2 / 16sqs average

The purchase of the laneway at the rear of No.1 and 3 Eastwood Street allowed for the provision of a third house at the rear of the existing properties.

The two cottages were to be gutted, renovated and have an extra level for a master bedroom with W.I.R. and ensuite. The east facing 18 degree angled wall of the first floor sets itself as a transition zone. The same angled wall becoming the composition of the makeup of the rear building.

The rear dwelling, breaks out of its simple box form utilising these angled walls. These are partially visual, however also necessary in some locations, to achieve Rescode setbacks. Screened balconies puncture through at strategic locations. A recessed covered balcony on the upper level with a weatherboard interior provides a hint of its connection to the weatherboard cottages adjoining.

Japanese chain downpipes on the southern side set to tie down and tame the rear building, which gives itself the sense of wanting to jump from the site. The form suggests movement and entices one to enter its confines.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

Martin Friedrich designed our development of 3 houses at Eastwood Street Kensington. This was a difficult site with many issues to contend with. However, with Martin's perseverance we have been successful in obtaining approval for the project.

The City of Melbourne was so impressed with the project that Martin was commended by the Urban planning department for an outstanding scheme.

I consistently find Martin to be very professional and easy to deal with. He is prompt, efficient and delivers superior quality service. His knowledge of architecture and construction is complemented by his friendly manner in dealing with all parties involved.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Martin for your next project. We thank Martin and his firm for what we think is a fantastic and exciting project. We plan to commence construction at the end of 2011.

We look forward to further continuing our relationship with other projects together.

Yours faithfully,
Tom Carra DIRECTOR
